The Rain Backed Off and I Was Still Awake

May 23, 2026 3:04 AM – 6:59 AM 10 tracks

I hadn't planned on being awake at three in the morning. But the apartment was warm — eighty-one degrees outside, light rain tapping the sliding door that faces Brickell — and sleep wasn't coming. I turned the dial to WXLI somewhere around the time Hold This Night started filling the room. Sonny Chiba building something that didn't demand anything from me. Just presence. Just company in the hollow hours.

The rain made everything softer. Jack Byrnes at 3:15, sparse and patient, the kind of track that knows nobody's performing alertness at this hour. Grand Tides settling into the space between the window and the bed like humidity itself. I stopped checking the time. The Chemical Brothers surfaced and disappeared. The night had its own clock.

Somewhere after four, the rain backed off. I noticed because the room changed — the wet hiss on glass gone, replaced by the deeper quiet of a city that forgot to stay up. Around Us stretched out like a held breath. Gorge's Winter Dreams hit D major and stayed there, unhurried, rooted in that Chicago lineage that doesn't need to announce itself. When LCD Soundsystem closed out the block just past five, there was a physical shift — like the air pressure in the apartment dropped a single notch.

The deep hours after that belonged to Guy Gerber, Timo Maas, the patience of producers who build without rushing toward resolution. I-95 was empty out the north-facing window. The Convention Center dark. Layo & Bushwacka's Sleepy Language arrived at six and named exactly what was happening — language for the space between night and morning that has no other word.

By the time Poolside asked to be taken home, scattered clouds had moved over Midtown and the sky wasn't black anymore. Brother Brown at 6:49, Danish precision breathing through an Undercatt remix. Then Darcie Peppers closed it — Morning Life at seven-oh-two — and the city was almost there. I'd crossed something. Not a finish line. More like a tide that carried me from one shore to another without asking permission.
